CAPAC® and Chloropac® System Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the CAPAC® System?

The CAPAC system is a long-term solution for preventing electrolysis and galvanic corrosion from attacking the submerged surfaces of vessels and mobile offshore production and drilling platforms. This permanent, on-board, or on-site automatic system consists of anodes, reference electrodes, shaft grounds and power supply/controllers to maintain just the right amount of protection.

Why install a CAPAC system?

Our CAPAC ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection) system is designed for a 20 plus year service life and is recognized as a superior alternative to sacrificial anode systems, which require frequent replacement.

The CAPAC system automatically provides optimum levels or current to ensure corrosion prevention, while also protecting the coating and its surface.

How does an ICCP System compare to a Sacrificial Anode System?

ICCP System Sacrificial Anode System
Long Life (20+ year design)   Limited life
Extending drydocking interval (5 years or more)   One to Two year drydocking interval
Optimum Protection   High stress on new coatings / increased wear on older coatings
Help reduce fuel consumption by maintaining a smooth hull   High drag and fuel use
Real time monitored levels of protection    Unknown protection levels

What is the Chloropac® system?

Chloropac is a Marine Growth Prevention System (MGPS) that produces sodium hypochlorite for direct injection into a vessel's sea chest and sea water cooling system. This unique technology is self-cleaning so does not require costly acid washing – leaving you to run your platform, vessel or plant, and not worry about biofouling issues.

Why use a Chloropac system?

Chloropac Systems provide the most effective, environmentally safe method of preventing biological fouling, using technically superior equipment for energy-efficient, long-term operation.

How does the Chloropac system compare to other technologies?

Chloropac System Other Technologies
No hazardous chemicals required Long-term storage of bulk sodium hypochlorite
Continuous treatment of micro and macro fouling Sacrificial anode MGPS systems need to be replaced frequently at a high cost to the ship owner
Utilizes cell technology with a large surface area for increased output per cell - up to 6x more   Takes up a larger footprint where space is a premium
Self-cleaning technology ensures continuous and reliable operation   Flat Plate type cells require periodic acid cleaning to prevent clogging
